George Washinton
Whatever your opinion of George Washington, and there are loud cries on both sides of the aisle, the Criterion Collection’s DVD release of the film isn’t likely to change your mind. Famously rejected by Sundance, only to be accepted by New York and Berlin, George Washington met with equal ambivalence from the critics whose reviews ranged from unconditional praise to cold dismissal. The overwhelming lack of consensus would have consigned a meeker film to indie hell, but somehow, the movie found a distributor in Cowboy Booking and was released in most major cities in October 2000.
