Image Entertainment has announced the release of I Vampiri (1956), a seminal gothic horror film from Italy. Directed by Riccardo Freda and photographed by Mario Bava (who also reportedly filmed several sequences), I Vampiri has previously only been available in America from public domain video houses. Now Image Entertainment offers what should prove to be the definite American release of this classic horror film that influenced both the development of gothic horror movies (such as Black Sunday and Castle of Blood) as well as detective thrillers (such as Dario Argento's Deep Red and Mario Bava's The Girl Who Knew Too Much).

When the French police discover the blood-drained bodies of young women floating in the river Seine, journalist Pierre Lantin undertakes a personal investigation into the "Vampire Murders." His work is forever being interrupted by the unwanted advances of Gisele, the beautiful and wealthy niece of the Duchess du Grand--who, unbeknownst to him, is, in fact, the vampire ringleader of a criminal underground of mad scientists and re-animated corpses, devoted to keeping her forever young!

The DVD includes trailers for other Mario Bava Collection titles, production stills and posters, a Mario Bava biography, and liner notes by Tim Lucas.

DVD release date: July 3, 2001.
